Tier 3 Data Center ATS

Our Dual Channel control system handles the Auto Transfer System that secures the electricity supply for this Tier 3 Data Centre. Installed in 2008 this system has proven our Dual and Triple Channel solution. It has handled multiple power outages without failure and identified faults before they became an issue.

In 2008 Our Dual Channel system was retrofitted after the original single channel control system failed in a manner that concerned the Data Centre Management. The site housed two data centres – both of which were supplied from a conventional switchboard arrangement housing 3 off Merlin Gerin 2000 Amp LV Motorised Circuit Breakers.

In 2010 a new Tier 3 Data Centre was built on the same site with three new switchboards housing 6 off ABB 4000 Amp LV Motorised Circuit Breakers. The control necessary for this expansion was an “add on” to the original control system installed in 2008. The expansion was performed without compromising the control duties for the existing data centres. We have calculated that one of our Dual Channel Auto Transfer Systems can handle 5 data centres each with 15 ACBs.

All CPUs, Power Supplies, Digital input, Digital output modules, relays, Phase Failure Relays are duplicated and fed separately to / from the Master and Slave PLCs.

The system has proven to operate successfully with several faults and still maintain its ability to complete the control task of restoring an electricity supply to the UPS units.

Each CPU has its own Touch Screen HMI that provides visual status, alarm and time stamped logging facility to allow the later analysis of a switching event. The HMI can also individually test Master and Slave systems to exercise the primary and redundant components of the entire control and major components of the system.

The system is further secured under a 24 hour call out support service – typical response from time of call to having an engineer on site : under 1 hour .
